We set out to visit some of the local farms that produced the veggies at the market. Our search wove us through some of the oldest streets in West Oakland, packed with amazing Victorians. We quickly became lost, but this seemed to be a part of the adventure. We stopped to ask some kids for directions, to see if they knew where the farm was. They weren’t sure, but wanted to know why Bruce’s shorts were so tight! They were curious about our signs—they said we were definitely in West Oakland.
We finally found the Cornell McBride Garden on 11th Street, nestled in a lot between two houses. It was unfortunately closed, but through the fencing we could see amazing flowers used to attract butterflies, and creative uses of old tires.
